SMITH & RICHARDSON

Who We Are

Founded in 1921, SMITH & RICHARDSON INC. has built a strong legacy as a provider of custom solutions for our customers in both chaplets for metal casting and precision machined parts markets.

Precision, Service, Reliability

We started our company building proprietary equipment to produce foundry chaplets. As customer demands for new parts sizes and styles expanded, our manufacturing processes, staff expertise and facility size expanded as well. By 1967, we had grown from 5 to 30 employees and more than tripled our plant size.

In 1986, we purchased a screw machine company to continue our growth, expanded our manufacturing capabilities, and solicited new markets and customers.

Smith and Richardson is also known for constantly learning and adapting new systems and processes to better serve you.

Precision, Service, Reliability

In the 80's, our expertise in working with metals allowed us to apply established methodologies to our new precision machined parts division. We created synergy among existing staff and systems allowing us to integrate both business divisions without adding overhead. Finally, as a consumer of precision machined parts we lowered our costs, expanded into new markets and attracted new customers.

In addition, we ramped up both our sales and marketing efforts to increase customer value.

In the late 80's and early 90's, Smith & Richardson set a goal of expanding its product lines and manufacturing capabilities into new domestic and international markets. In 1994, we achieved ISO certification; this milestone positioned the company for continued growth.

By 1998, we developed our first "lights out manufacturing" work cell, which allows machines to run unattended. In 1999, we integrated our first CNC lathe to assess the advanced technology. This allowed us to begin to understand "lean" business practices and how they can be integrated into our manufacturing environment.

As the new millennium approached, there was a strategic decision to continue present business practices and position the company to be viable and growing in the new world of globalization. Beginning in 2000 and continuing today, all members of our organization undergo extensive training in managerial and operational and social programs. "Lean" business practices are at the forefront of every action and are reflected in the number of "lights out manufacturing" processes, flat organizational chart, stellar on time delivery, reduced inventory, both finished and work in process, and increased manufacturing capacity due to elimination of waste. Additionally, in 2003, we continued changing our business by assessing suitable manufacturing alliances strategically located throughout the world to service existing and new customers. This objective signified our move from a company solely focused on manufacturing to one positioned to deliver applicable products when required.

Each subsequent year Smith & Richardson Inc. uses it customer feedback, strategic plan, budgets, key operational measurements, and market research to ensure what we bring to our customers is truly "Part of Your Success".
